Growing Gardens,

Growing Minds!

Why We Exist

Schoolyard Roots cultivates curiosity and connections through hands-on learning gardens. We engage communities with food and nature to inspire, delight, and bring classroom concepts to life.

We partner with twelve Tuscaloosa-area elementary schools. Core program: Gardens 2 Schools. Project-based learning, outdoor exploration, and nutrition education for over 4,884 students in grades K–5. Gardens are outdoor labs tied to Alabama State Standards. Programs help children discover fruits and vegetables, foster empathy and stewardship, and connect classroom learning to the real world.

Partner with us: bring joyful garden-based education to nearly 5,000 students and families.

“The biggest impact of the school garden program is how it helps students connect with nature while learning responsibility and teamwork. It’s a space where curiosity grows right alongside the plants.”
